Al-Ansar Mosque / ONG&ONG Pte Ltd

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Al-Ansar Mosque prides itself as a community mosque located along Green Link, between Bedok Reservoir and East Coast Park. The design of the mosque is focused on creating an open and inclusive atmosphere, which is inviting to worshippers and the community at large.

The mosque also embodies the idea of embracing both the new and the old in one vessel. Elements like the minaret and main prayer hall’s dome are retained from the past and integrated with new structures like the floating podium, which will house classrooms and auditoriums. With a 300-seater capacity, the auditorium can be used as an extended prayer space, as well as a multi-purpose venue for events like weddings.

mosque2

A mosque has to embody particular symbolic elements that represent the core beliefs and values of the Muslim community, while at the same time taking account of the multi-cultural environment in which it exists. For that reason, the mosque had to be designed so that it appeared open and inclusive. Furthermore, it has to reach out to the community at large and the design had to embody those values.

mosque5

The main design feature devised by the architects was a large covered community plaza at the front o the site, crated by a podium consisting of a cantilevered steel girder box. It embraces the existing prayer hall and minaret, which appears to float above the plaza and surrounding streets. The plaza has been conceived so that it may serve multiple functions, an is envisioned as providing for the many facets of Malay life: an informal gathering space to encourage togetherness, extended worship as well as social events.

mosque4

The new volume floats above the plaza and houses new programmes, including a new multi-purpose 300-seat auditorium and function rooms that may also be used as an extended prayer space for up to 460 people.

mosque7

The steel frame facade is articulated into an intricate pattern inspired by the arabesque. By taking the simple geometry of the rotated square and layering it upon secondary structures and external screening, a delicate pattern is created so that the mosque has a distinctive face to show the community. The facade has been designed to allow natural daylight to filter into inner space, while also enabling air flow to naturally ventilate the building like a porous, open volume.

The existing minaret is celebrated as a focal point, and the blue dome is given aesthetic lines on the exterior, while the ceiling was modified to express the eight-cornered star generated by the juxtaposition of two geometries. This was inspired by the arabesque and these two structures will serve as an important link to the past as the updated design forges a chapter for the Al-Ansar Mosque.

mosque9

The new structure opens up the area and provides an improved visual connectivity, as well as physical accessibility to the surrounding community. It is designed to be inviting and to encourage people to enter and join in the activities taking place there. The covered plaza will serve a multitude of functions, ranging from informal gatherings to an extended area for prayer and worship.

The space available also offers infinite possibilities for interactions between the people, as it constitutes and ‘urban room’ where the Muslim community can come together. Other key features in the mosque’s redesign include a second block that houses classrooms and offices, as well as religious classrooms and a kindergarten.

The ‘Old and New’ will be expressed independently whilst being experienced collectively as an integral whole. A series of skylight mediate the interfaces between the two states and a visitor moving through the building will constantly experience the presence of both – akin to a continuous dialogue between tradition and modernity.

Büro Ole Scheeren Unveils the “Future of Vertical Housing” in Vancouver

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Büro Ole Scheeren has envisioned a “future vision for vertical living.” Designed to serve as an “urban pivot” on one of Vancouver‘s main avenues, 1500 West Georgia Street, the multifaceted tower features a system of vertically shifted apartment modules and outdoor terraces that branch out horizontally to “engage the space of the city and activateVancouver’s waterfront skyline.”

v3

“Vancouver possesses a unique balance of urban conditions surrounded by spectacular nature that provides fertile ground for envisioning new possibilities for future living in a cosmopolitan and environmentally-friendly city” says Ole Scheeren. “The design for this building exemplifies our ambition to reconnect architecture with the natural and civic environment and go beyond the hermetic confines of towers that increasingly inscribe our lives.”

“Vancouver, consistently ranked as one of the most livable cities, has much to offer: beyond a vibrant social environment, the ‘City of Glass’ is known for its buildings of transparency and for its breathtaking surroundings of clear water and snow-covered mountains. But, like many cities today, its skyline is dominated by verticality – extrusions of generic towers that don’t engage their environment and create isolation rather than connection,” added the practice. “Ole Scheeren’s design opens up the inert shaft of the tower to embrace both city and nature in a three-dimensional sculpture which projects the space of living outwards into the surrounding context.”

Goodrich wins 1st special recognition prize for SMEs

Reading Time: 2 minutes

GOODRICH Global, a dealer in interior wall-coverings, carpets, fabrics and flooring, is the winner of Aon Hewitt”s first Best Employers Special Recognition – SME prize.

“It is in line with our vision to be an employer of choice among SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), and to offer prospective employees an attractive option to build their career with us,” says Goodrich”s chairman and chief executive Chan Chong Beng of the Best Employer award.

In growing with the company, our employees at Goodrich get the chance to help shape it into an innovative venture. They also get to keep in shape themselves and make a contribution to society at large while bonding with each other.

These are the offshoots of three “people practices” in the company which Goodrich is most proud of: I-CUBE; Football With A オンライン スロット Heart (FWAH); and Healthy Employees” Award.

I-CUBE is a worker-participation scheme introduced in March last year. It stands for Ideation, Innovation and Improvement; and is part of Goodrich”s effort to build “a culture of innovation, problem-solving and continuous improvement at all levels” in the firm.

The aim specifically is “to transform great ideas generated from employees into innovative solution and improvement initiatives”, Goodrich says in a submission for the Best Employers award. Essentially, the scheme entails staff offering ideas which – if accepted – will be put into practice with the help of managers or experts provided by the firm. The staff are rewarded for their contribution.

FWAH is a charity fund-raising event in which Goodrich”s staff take part to raise money for needy and handicapped people. Staff not only play in the football matches but also hand out food and drinks, cheer their team and clean up.

This has “brought us closer as a caring company which believes in corporate social responsibility”, Goodrich says.

The Healthy Employees” Award hands out S$400 yearly to staff who keep themselves healthy. It also provides free annual health checks, health talks and exercises.

Goodrich says that the award has helped push the number of healthy workers up from 10 per cent to over 50 per cent of the the company”s workforce. It has also led to lower absenteeism and medical costs.

Mecca has unveiled plans to build the world’s largest hotel by 2017. The 10,000-room Abraj Kudai hotel will be built in the Manafia district, just south of the Grand Mosque. It will be a city within a city, hosting 70 restaurants, food courts, a bus station, shopping mall, conference center, ballroom and five floors dedicated entirely to the Saudi royal family; all will be set within a cluster of 12 towers standing atop a 10-story podium and centered around a massive dome.

As some fear that the “sanctity of the place” is being replaced by “Las Vegas-like” accommodation, which has had an overall impact on the affordability of the historic pilgrimage.

Meanwhile, the prayer halls at the Grand Mosque are being expanded to accommodate an expected seven million worshippers by 2040. Some of which will stay in the adjacent Abraj al-Bait clocktower – a luxury hotel that is the world’s second tallest building.

Mitsubishi Corporation Enters Housing Development Business in Vietnam

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) announced today that it will be working in partnership with Sembcorp Development on a housing development project in Vietnam.

The project will involve the construction of eleven 16-18 story condominiums in the province of Binh Duong, just north of Ho Chi Minh City. Some 1,419 units are planned for the complex, which will be built in phases in the “main gate” area of Binh Duong’s Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP).

VSIP, an enterprise that builds and operates industrial parks across Vietnam, was set up in 1996 based on an agreement between the governments of Vietnam and Singapore. To date, VSIPs have been established at six locations across the country. MC and Sembcorp have been working in collaboration with VSIP since its inception and in September 2012, MC and Sembcorp signed a strategic partnership agreement for comprehensive real estate development in South East Asia with the aim of working together on township development initiatives in the region. This project is the first to be executed under that agreement.

Due to strong economic growth, Vietnam has been attracting much foreign investment, particularly in the manufacturing sector, which has led to an increase in population around industrial parks such as VSIP. This has, in turn, created greater need for urban development, such as the establishment of housing and commercial facilities. This project at Binh Duong is a first step for MC as it seeks to deepen its involvement in real estate development at Vietnam’s VSIPs.

MC is already engaged in a number of real estate businesses around the world, including projects in Japan, North America, China and South East Asia. In addition to the expertise developed through these projects, MC will draw on Japanese technological and product planning expertise to expand its real estate development business in Vietnam and other countries in South East Asia, including the Philippines, Indonesia and Myanmar.

MVRDV, OMA and DP Architects are among five shortlisted teams competing to design the Singapore Rail Corridor. Spanning the island south to north, from the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station to the Woodlands Checkpoint, the corridor is the site of Singapore’s previous rail link to Malaysia. With this competition, the Singapore government hopes to develop a feasible plan to transform the 24 kilometer stretch into a public greenway that connects four important urban nodes: Buona Vista, the Bukit Timah Railway Station area, the former Bukit Timah Fire Station, and Kranji.

“The expanse of the corridor running through the centre of the entire country presents an unprecedented opportunity to develop a new typology of landscape with transformative effects for the country as a whole. This is a project that has the potential to improve quality of life for generations to come,” says OMA Partner Michael Kokora.

64 teams responded to the government’s call for ideas, and now only five have been selected to move onto the competition’s second stage. These five teams are…

  • West 8 and DP Architects
  • Grant Associates and MVRDV with Architects 61
  • Turenscape International and MKPL Architects
  • Nikken Sekkei with Tierra Design
  • OLIN Partnership and OMA Asia with DP Architect

Evaluation panel member Dr. Malone-Lee Lai Choo, Director for the Centre for Sustainable Asian Cities at National University of Singapore and member of the Rail Corridor Partnership, said, “We were looking for schemes that are particularly strong in responding to the ecology of the site, that respect its natural qualities, while introducing sensitive design interventions to enhance them. They must demonstrate understanding and appreciation of the needs, sentiments and collective aspirations of users and residents. We would also want the Corridor to be an outstanding urban asset, and are therefore open to innovative concepts, particularly in and around the nodes; ideas that demonstrate freshness of approach and potentially exceptional design qualities that will enhance our urban landscape.”

The teams will now develop their proposals and prepare for a public review at the end of this year. The winning design team is expected to be announced in November.

NTU Set To Become The Greenest Eco-Campus World-Wide by 2020

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Walking the green talk, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is building the region’s first sports hall with a unique long-span timber roof structure that provides five times better heat insulation than concrete. This will reduce its energy consumption by at least 40 per cent.

The university is also building Singapore’s first high-rise buildings where whole rooms complete with internal fixtures are built at the factory and then put together on-site. This saves up to 40 per cent in manpower and 20 per cent in construction time.

These two new facilities are designed with sustainable features, in line with NTU’s emphasis on sustainability research and ambition to achieve a 35 per cent reduction in energy, water and waste by 2020 under its EcoCampus initiative.

“NTU is well-known for sustainability research but we also put it in practice by designing our lush, green campus based on sustainability principles,” said Associate Professor Kwok Kian Woon, Associate Provost for Student Life.

To be ready in 2016, the new sports hall and residential buildings have already clinched the Green Mark Platinum – the highest award for sustainable building design in Singapore awarded by the Building Construction Authority (BCA).

Inspired by nature

Apart from sustainable features such as energy-saving LED lighting and solar powered systems, the sports hall and residential building are designed to take advantage of their natural surroundings. Using computer modelling of the sun and wind patterns on-site, the buildings’ designers aim to harness natural winds so students will enjoy good ventilation with average wind speeds calculated at about 0.5 metres per second.

To reduce the need for air-conditioning, all rooms in the residential hall will have windows that reflect heat using a special coating, and louvres that shield any direct sunlight.

The sports hall will also have a similar feature, with two-layer walls designed for heat insulation on hot days. The walls will have special metal coils with cold water flowing through them. This cools the wind that enters the hall and removes hot air quickly through convection.

These eco features will save over 40 per cent energy and 30 per cent in water consumption, and also give students a unique sports experience. Students will be able to play badminton without any wind disruption from fans or the need for air-conditioning to stay cool.

Championing sustainable construction

Breaking new grounds in sustainable construction methods, the new residential hall and sports halls will soon become NTU’s new icons in sustainability.

Using an innovative wood construction method, the sports hall will have a continuous wave-like timber roof arching over 70 metres long. Not only does it provide five times better heat insulation, it also saves up to 40 per cent in labour costs.

Similarly, the prefabrication method used in the North Hill residential buildings, which is Singapore’s first “Lego-style” public high-rise buildings, saves up to 40 per cent in manpower and 20 per cent in construction time.

Whole rooms units complete with internal fixtures will be produced off-site, which ensures consistency in workmanship and better overall construction quality.

Much anticipated facilities

The new sports hall will double the seating capacity of the current one with almost 1,000 mechanised seats that can be retracted and turned into 13 full-sized badminton courts or three basketball, volleyball, and netball courts.

The three-storey sports hall will house a weights training gym, three activity rooms with floor-to-ceiling mirrors for aerobics and dance, two multi-purpose activity rooms, a VIP lounge, and an activity space for various student activities.

The new 13-storey residential halls will be a one-stop integrated hub with eateries, shops and common spaces such as rooftop gardens with BBQ pits, lounges and study rooms. It will accommodate over 1,850 students, and will house the campus’ largest fully-equipped gym, which is about five times the size of a four-room HDB flat. There will also be a new multi-purpose hall for various sports and activities such as badminton, basketball, and the popular inter-hall games.

Professor Kwok said, “As a residential campus, we focus on providing a holistic education for our students. Residential living and sports are important components of a vibrant campus life and provide opportunities for students to develop positive attributes such as teamwork, leadership, discipline, and confidence. “

The sports and residential halls are part of NTU’s campus master plan. By 2016, NTU will be able to house an additional 5,000 students on campus with hall places for almost 14,000 NTU students.

NTU is also set to become the greenest eco-campus in the world, with its aim to have a 35 per cent reduction in energy, water and waste by 2020
