Minister for National Development, Mr Lawrence Wong, will grace the opening ceremony.

An energy-efficient event strategy that can take the heat
The future of the green building industry is facing a high degree of complexity and uncertainty due to climate change and the disruptive nature of innovation. As regenerative solutions take centre stage this year, visitors to BEX Asia will see a strategic three-way rollout of the exhibition and seminar to focus on green architectures, smart technologies and energy efficient solutions.

One-stop business exchange platform
Continuing the tradition of previous exhibitions, BEX Asia 2016 will also house dedicated market pavilions from mainland China, Taiwan and Singapore, consolidating in-country exhibitors for an overview of game-changing solutions of local relevance to the regional audience.

“We aim to lead the charge for sustainable coating solutions for greener architectures through our innovative products. Our eco-friendly products can improve the quality of life, and we’re very excited to be at BEX Asia 2016 to share our expertise and network with the community,” said Kel Low, Senior Manager, Specifier Relations, Nippon Paint.

Echoing a similar sentiment is Alex Lau, CEO, Anacle Systems, a home-grown green technology firm determined to resolve energy wastage with its smart energy management system. “BEX Asia serves as a launch pad for transformation in areas of energy efficiency and smart technology. Our generation is technologically savvy and it is important to have energy saving abilities like smart meters and energy tracking systems at our fingertips. BEX Asia is an ideal place for us to be part of dialogues to drive breakthroughs in next-gen energy management.”

Anacle Systems and Nippon Paint will be joined by returning and new exhibitors including Akzo Nobel Paints, Camfil, Fuji SMBE, Kansai Paint, LifeSmart Singapore, Mun Hean, Parex Group, REC, and ST Electronics at BEX Asia 2016.

Thought provoking insights exchange
According to the Global Green Building Market Outlook 2020 published by Research and Markets, the worldwide green building market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of about 13 percent from 2015 to 20202. This growth can partly be attributed to rising awareness of the implications of climate change, and the understanding that green buildings can result in lower level of greenhouse emissions.

To continue to advance such knowledge, industry innovators will gather at the ‘Green View’ to share related insights from which our man-made environment is founded on. Seminar goers can expect topics ranging from an education of materials necessary for green architectures by San Marco Paints and Graphenstone, to visionary tales of a smart community by Lux Research and getting to the heart of the energy efficiency boom by AECOM.

To complement these discussions, event organisers have also enhanced the business-matching programme. Set to attract the region’s key suppliers and marketers, BEX Asia 2016 is expected to surpass more than US$125m in green building business transactions. Visitors can expect one-to-one business matching, as well as key networking with regional delegations including Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and beyond Asia from Italy.

“Beyond sustainability and the recognised need to reduce carbon footprint, there is a greater call to strengthen competitiveness and collaboration between private and public stakeholders for collective action. We want to walk the talk and ensure that BEX Asia continues to be relevant. The solid foundation we’ve built will help us continue conversations for a better tomorrow for future generations,” said Louise Chua, Business Development Director and Project Director, Reed Exhibitions, organiser of BEX Asia 2016.

Supported by prominent organisations in the industry, BEX Asia 2016 is one of the anchor events of the Singapore Green Building Week (SGBW).

Aimed at inspiring green building leaders around the region, BEX Asia 2016 will be held alongside the second edition of Mostra Convegno Expocomfort (MCE) Asia, the leading trade exhibition dedicated to energy efficient solutions in HVAC-R, plumbing technology, sanitary accessories, and renewable energy, as well as the International Green Building Conference (IGBC) organised by the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore. Both exhibitions will play host to more than 450 exhibiting companies across the region to a congregation of over 12,000 trade visitors.

Professor John Anthony Cherry announced as 7th Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize Laureate

Reading Time: 4 minutes

The Singapore International Water Week, a biennial event that gathers leaders and innovators from the global water industry on a single platform awarded the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2016 to world-renowned hydrogeologist, Professor John Anthony Cherry. The announcement of the Water Prize Laureate this year marks the first time it is held in conjunction with World Water Day to emphasise the integral role water has in affecting communities and economies of all sizes.

Mr Ng Joo Hee (L), Chief Executive, PUB, and Professor John Anthony Cherry (R), Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2016 laureate.

Mr Ng Joo Hee (L), Chief Executive, PUB, and Professor John Anthony Cherry (R), Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2016 laureate.

Currently in its 7th edition, the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize has consistently attracted world-class talent and excellence in individuals or organisations who drive the development or application of innovative technologies, policies or programmes that aim to solve global water challenges. This year, the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize Council lauds Prof Cherry for his contributions and influence in groundwater management, and lifelong dedication to the protection of groundwater resources – a major water source for many countries around the world and one that constitutes 95 percent of the usable freshwater on the planet.

A leading authority in hydrogeology, Prof Cherry’s revolutionary research in collaboration with international partners has provided the global groundwater community with a better scientific framework to formulate policies and best practices. He has been a major influence in advancing global recognition of groundwater processes and the development of better field methods for groundwater contamination.

The revolutionary research findings and policy impact by Prof. Cherry have contributed to more effective risk management in groundwater pollution control measures, as well as revisions and formulation of new groundwater remediation guidelines and approaches in several countries including the United States. The effect of his contributions have also established new models for public-private partnerships for groundwater research.

Adding to his list of accomplished achievements, the monitoring technologies and clean-up processes developed by Prof. Cherry have been implemented in areas that face groundwater contamination, including those in the United States, China, and Brazil, among others. In fact, one of the most important insights unearthed by Prof Cherry subsequently formed the theoretical basis for the set of benchmark criteria used in the disposal of hazardous industrial and nuclear waste, which has been incorporated into regulatory frameworks.

Prof. Cherry is also an advocate for the need to monitor and research the effects of shale gas exploitation and fracking on groundwater resources. In recent years, he has focused his research on fractured rock, the least understood of all groundwater systems but one that is particularly susceptible to contamination. His knowledge in fractured rock hydrology and rock drilling has contributed towards the supply of safe drinking water to people living in mountainous bedrock regions with limited vehicle access. Prof Cherry remains active in the scientific community and is currently leading an international team to acquire and test small, low-cost portable rock drills to make small-capacity wells that are designed to have a low risk of bacterial contamination.

T.Y. Lin International Pte Ltd (TYLI) received the 2015 Structural Award (Structural Heritage Category) of The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) for their role in the restoration of Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall (VTVCH). Dr. Tan Guan, TYLI’s Director of Building Structures, Qualified Person (QP) and Project Manager for the project accepted the award at the recent 2015 Structural Awards ceremony held on 13th November 2015 in London.

Judges from the Structural Awards 2015 called the restoration project a “bold structural undertaking,” and noted that “the structural work was carried out with sensitivity and great care for the historical features, further enhancing the building.” They were impressed with the structural interventions of the project in restoring an intricate 150-year-old concert hall and upgrading it to modern times. The 2015 judging panel was comprised of some of the industry’s finest and their collective knowledge spans a variety of disciplines including academia, architecture, construction, sustainability, innovation and research.

TYLI provided civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services for the restoration of VTVCH. The structural challenges managed by TYLI included: reinforcing and strengthening the Theatre’s footings and foundations, to create two new underground basements; replace the Concert Hall’s timber floor with a concrete surface, to achieve the acoustic requirements of a 21st century performing arts venue; removal of the non-original columns from the foyer to create an open, welcoming space.

Further, a key element of the works was the restoration of the façade walls, which had deteriorated over time. The beams were exposed for structural strengthening with steel plates and the application of protective coatings. A new steel beam was installed where no lintel beam was provided.

The facade wall at the loading bay area was also strengthened by the installation of new steel beams and columns to allow the door openings to be enlarged for direct access to the new service lifts.
