GROHE is Founding Sponsor of the World Architecture Festival, 2021

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The digital edition of the 2021 World Architecture Festival (WAF) took place with the theme “Resetting the city” from 30 November till 3 December 2021

Supporting architects and designers around the world to create healthier urban landscapes during and beyond the pandemic, GROHE is proud to be the main sponsor of the World Architecture Festival (WAF) 2021, a role taken on by the brand upon the inception of the festival in 2008. As a founding partner, GROHE, a leading global brand for complete bathroom solutions and kitchen fittings, represents the unique role water plays in the design discipline and helps shape innovative architectural visions and solutions around the element of water. During the challenging times of the past years, GROHE has continued to support the architect community by sponsoring this year’s WAF and the Water Research Prize 2021.

Greener, cleaner cities

The festival’s theme was“Resetting the City”. Ecological concerns regarding city planning, biodiversity and sustainability now meet the overall need to create healthier, safer surroundings more than ever. As concepts for sourcing clean energy, reducing pollution, and clean water supplies are now directly linked to the control of pandemics, they are becoming the centre of urban planning strategies across the globe, and have also become the focus of this year’s festival. A total of 320 hours of inspiring keynotes, sessions, and panel discussions were presented to the WAF community. As a highlight of this year’s festival, architects from all over the world came together to compete with one another to win “The World Building of the Year”, an award which was unveiled by GROHE on 3 December 2021 as the grand finale.

Inspired by nature – a win to fight global water scarcity

In this context, GROHE awarded the annual Water Research Prize again to projects aiming to find creative solutions for water in the built environment. Out of 53 winners awarded this year, 22 were from Asia. China led the way with 11 wins, the most amount of winners, followed by 7 from Australia and 1 each from India, New Zealand, Singapore, and Vietnam.

The Water Research Prize has been part of the World Architecture Festival since 2017 when the WAF X Manifesto was first published. The manifesto identified the most important challenges for architects within the next ten years, including water in relation to the built environment. With this year’s festival focusing on improving the quality of life in urban areas through greener, healthier infrastructures, the close connection to water is particularly striking. By sponsoring the award, GROHE has been supporting research in the field of unique architectural challenges around water for the past four years and is proud to continue doing so at this year’s festival.

Geo Connect Asia 2021 Attracts Close to 1,200 Attendees

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Geo Connect Asia (GCA) 2021, Southeast Asia’s inaugural geospatial and location intelligence technology conference, welcomed some 1,200 exhibitors, speakers, delegates, and visitors to participate in the event on 24 and 25 March 2021. In-person attendees were treated to two eventful days of keynote speeches, plenary sessions, roundtables, and more, while about 700 professionals and media from across the global geospatial community tuned in virtually to enjoy a highly curated, immersive and interactive virtual trade event experience. Both physical and virtual attendees hailed from 55 countries.

The event was graced by Singapore Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister-in-charge of the Smart Nation Initiative Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, as Guest-of-Honour. Mr Alvin Tan, Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Culture, Community & Youth also attended GCA 2021, and was brought on a tour of the event where he met with exhibitors and trade delegates, culminating in a visit to the Singapore Pavilion – an exhibition hall featuring myriad Singaporean firms that are part of a fast-growing local geospatial and location intelligence industry.

GCA 2021 was supported by a host of Singapore government agencies, namely the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Singapore Land Authority (SLA),  Economic Development Board (EDB) and Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA).

GCA 2021 also featured Digital Construction Asia 2021 (DCA21) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Asia 2021 (UAV21), which showcased the full range of geospatial and location intelligence applications for key government agencies and enterprises.

Supported by the Emerging Stronger Taskforce (EST)Alliance for Action (AfA) on Enabling Safe and Innovative Visitor Experiences, such pilot events facilitate progressive scaling up to larger events, and provide a crucial springboard to recovery and growth for both the ASEAN geospatial community and the wider MICE industry, overturning the assumption that larger international MICE events cannot be held safely. They are also a testbed for event organisers to refine the implementation of safe management measures and best practices for MICE events progressively.

With a multitude of innovations to ensure the safety and well-being of in-person attendees in light of the pandemic, GCA 2021 saw the use of a Bluetooth-enabled dongle which tracked attendees’ location and duration of interaction with other attendees at the event. The device, which was part of the Safe Event platform trialled onsite, aided GCA 2021 in ensuring the necessary Safe Management Measures (SMMs) were met. The pilot event also featured Geo Suites – ballrooms converted into “exhibition booths” that assumed the role of a typical trade show floor as the main mode of interaction and helped to minimise intermingling between cohorts of attendees – and Meeting Pods that allowed 2-to-2 meetings to take place with the safety of a plexiglass divider as well as hand sanitisers and cleaning supplies.

At GCA 2021, Antigen Rapid Tests (ART) were administered onsite both days of the event. The expansion of daily testing beyond foreign attendees allowed risk to be managed during interactions throughout the conference. The testing provided valuable findings and data that will allow for the progressive refinement of SMMs and best practices for future MICE events in Singapore.

Rupert Owen, Co-founder of Geo Connect Asia, organised by Montgomery Asia, said, “Two years in the making, Geo Connect Asia 2021 has navigated significant disruption and uncertainty before making our much-anticipated debut in Singapore this year. This was possible due in no small part to the strong support from our many like-minded partners from both the public and private spheres, with Singapore Land Authority’s (SLA) and Singapore Tourism Board’s (STB) support, in particular, proving instrumental in guiding the development of a world-leading hybrid platform for the geospatial and location intelligence markets in Asia. Equally important were our sponsors and other partners from across an array of industries, led by Platinum Sponsor Trimble, Gold Sponsor Bentley Systems, Silver Sponsor UP42, and Conference Sponsors Planet Labs, Synspective, and Dassault Systèmes.”

“Geo Connect Asia 2021 has been a success, and will hopefully be the catalyst not only for the geospatial industry evolution across Southeast Asia, but also for the inevitable recovery of the resilient MICE industry. We really appreciate the support we have received from all parties in enabling the launch of Geo Connect Asia. We are looking forward to engaging with the industry over the next few weeks, both in terms of themes and content, as well as exploring the best format to enable face to face engagement.”

Geo Connect Asia will return next year on 23 and 24 March 2022 as an even bigger affair, with more exhibitors and conference line-ups featuring some of the most prominent experts and professionals from across the global geospatial space. A Turning Point for the Exhibition Industry

While other countries still struggle with trade fair postponements, exhibitions in China have returned to almost normal, thanks to efficient pandemic management and significant market growth since 2020. Industry companies are eager for a physical place to reveal their latest products, exchange knowledge, learn industry trends, and expand their network. The presence of over 700 exhibitors at R+T Asia 2021 in 68,000 square metres (the space of five halls) is a strong confirmation that the industry is determined and ready to get back on track.

The show will be co-located with HD+ Home Decoration Asia, DOMOTEX Asia CHINAfloor exhibition,BIC-International (Building Industrialization of Construction) Exhibition Asia, IPD, Cadex, and Workspace, which are all related to the building and construction industry. At R+T Asia 2021, visitors will meet the industry’s leading brands such as Yuma, Raex, Wistar, Xiangde, YFA, Baolong, Hande, Lucheng, Fastlink, Greenawn, A-OK, Deshelong, Wintom, and many more. Furthermore, R+T Asia will include hybrid formats that allow virtual visitors from anywhere in the world to experience the physical exhibition and to connect after the show.

Exhibition Innovations

Launched shortly before the show, the new R+T Asia website supports professionals in the sun shading and door/gate industries, offering more business opportunities and networking, free of issues related to travel. This is Asia’s first online meeting place for this industry, and it provides a year-long interactive showcase where R+T Asia exhibitors highlight their newest products and contact directly with professional buyers.

The first and second days of the exhibitions will see a new hybrid Matchmaking Event that allows selected exhibitors to meet internationally hosted buyers in over 100 pre-arranged video meetings. The virtual meetings will be held in a specially designed Matchmaking Area, attended by exhibitors in Shanghai and hosted buyers connected from anywhere in the world.

In addition, visitors unable to travel to Shanghai can try the new Virtual Booth Tours, which will offer a unique chance for a remote on-site experience, an overview of the industry and the latest product innovations. Virtual Booth Tours are recorded at the exhibitor booths in Shanghai and then streamed on R+T Asia’s official Twitter account on 24 and 25 March 2021, revealing the most interesting booths, companies, and products on display.

More than 20 lectures and conferences on-site will involve leading industry experts, industry associations, architects, and designers. Among the variety of topics, R+T Asia will cover the promotion of stable energy-efficient buildings by the shading industry. The show also features one of last year’s hottest topics: China Smart Home.

These topics will be discussed by Shanghai Pudong Intelligent Lighting Association; their presentation is themed as “2021 Intelligent Lighting & System Integration Development Forum.” The CSHIA (China Smart Home Industry Alliance) will discuss “Embrace Smart Change, Integrate Innovation — 2021 Smart Home Industry New Trend Summit.” The well-known ENOcean Alliance will promote the “2021 Smart Buildings and Home Application Tendency.” In addition, the show will also host numerous events for architects and designers.

Post-Show Innovations

For the first time, the most insightful presentations at the show will be shared online after the show. The post-show educational programming will continue also in the form of webinars with industry experts, providing valuable information for companies that want to enter the Chinese market and understand Chinese industry trends.
