GOODRICH Global, a dealer in interior wall-coverings, carpets, fabrics and flooring, is the winner of Aon Hewitt”s first Best Employers Special Recognition – SME prize.

“It is in line with our vision to be an employer of choice among SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), and to offer prospective employees an attractive option to build their career with us,” says Goodrich”s chairman and chief executive Chan Chong Beng of the Best Employer award.

In growing with the company, our employees at Goodrich get the chance to help shape it into an innovative venture. They also get to keep in shape themselves and make a contribution to society at large while bonding with each other.

These are the offshoots of three “people practices” in the company which Goodrich is most proud of: I-CUBE; Football With A オンライン スロット Heart (FWAH); and Healthy Employees” Award.

I-CUBE is a worker-participation scheme introduced in March last year. It stands for Ideation, Innovation and Improvement; and is part of Goodrich”s effort to build “a culture of innovation, problem-solving and continuous improvement at all levels” in the firm.

The aim specifically is “to transform great ideas generated from employees into innovative solution and improvement initiatives”, Goodrich says in a submission for the Best Employers award. Essentially, the scheme entails staff offering ideas which – if accepted – will be put into practice with the help of managers or experts provided by the firm. The staff are rewarded for their contribution.

FWAH is a charity fund-raising event in which Goodrich”s staff take part to raise money for needy and handicapped people. Staff not only play in the football matches but also hand out food and drinks, cheer their team and clean up.

This has “brought us closer as a caring company which believes in corporate social responsibility”, Goodrich says.

The Healthy Employees” Award hands out S$400 yearly to staff who keep themselves healthy. It also provides free annual health checks, health talks and exercises.

Goodrich says that the award has helped push the number of healthy workers up from 10 per cent to over 50 per cent of the the company”s workforce. It has also led to lower absenteeism and medical costs.

The NUH Medical Centre, adjoins NUH and is located directly above Kent Ridge Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) underground station and tunnels. The site itself presented a range of engineering challenges including managing risk to highly sensitive receptors due to its proximity to NUH and the MRT system as well as varying terrain and geological profile.  Further, the Kent Ridge MRT station was originally designed and built with provision for a future building that would house seven levels of medical units. The TYLI structural design team was initially tasked with carrying out the feasibility study and subsequently was appointed as the C&S Consultant for the 72,000m2 gross floor area, 19 storey Medical Centre, inclusive of 7 nos. of bunker structures for  the National University Cancer Institute, Singapore in the development.

The awards recognise engineering design excellence from ACES members. Structural safety, buildability and sustainability were at the core of TYLI’s design considerations. The design and successful delivery of the development, demanded extensive project planning and stakeholder engagement, consideration of multiple structural options with safe construction methodology in mind, and comprehensive design coordination to ensure timely project completion. As well as ensuring compliance with the Codes of Practice for Constructability and Railway Protection, to safeguard the MRT structures.

The latest and one of three buildings serving hospital patients within the NUH campus, the Medical Centre houses 190 consultation rooms, more than 200 treatment and procedure rooms, 10 surgery operating theatres, as well as dedicated space for teaching and clinical trials.

About the Project

NUH Medical Centre

Completed in 2013, the NUH Medical Centre is part of redevelopment plans for the National University Health System campus. The project was delivered within an ambitious, 28 month program, overcoming and managing a number of significant challenges associated with the site. As Structural Designer, and drawing on the firm’s expertise with healthcare structures and complex building design, the TYLI team worked closely with the NUH Medical Centre team and contractors in order to develop the site directly over the operating Kent Ridge Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station and tunnels and adjacent to an existing hospital, with minimum impact and inconvenience to the MRT or the hospital.

Challenges faced by TYLI included developing a site that featured both undulating terrain (ranging from 127.5m to 141.95m) and a varying geological profile, with the rock formation ranging from fully weathered to highly weathered rock. TYLI also had to develop the optimum structural system in order to support the operation of a state-of-the-art healthcare facility that houses highly-sensitive medical equipment.

Located directly above Kent Ridge MRT station on Singapore’s Circle Line, the new NUH Medical Centre has a gross floor area of 72,000m2 and accommodates six linear accelerator bunkers, operating theaters, a diagnostic imaging facility, four floors of medical suites, the National University Cancer Institute of Singapore, and four decks of integrated parking.

J.Avenue – Pomeroy Studio revamps JCube Mall interior to create an all-new shopping experience

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Major retail developer CapitaMalls recently turned to award-winning green design firm Pomeroy Studio to design their latest concept retail concessions in Singapore’s west coast mall, JCube. The designers and thought leaders of sustainable built environments sought to bring a new retail flavour to Jurong through the refurbishment of 10,000sq ft of retail space.‘J.Avenue’ is inspired by the popular shopping districts found in Tokyo and Seoul, respectively, and features a total of 70 shops selling fashion apparel and accessories. Phase 1 opened earlier in September to the excitement and delight of the young and trendy, while the roll out of the concept into other phases are scheduled by the end of the year.

Chloe Li,  Associate Principal at Pomeroy Studio and the project director has consulted with CapitaMalls on other AEI projects such as Raffles City Singapore since 2009. She said, “The concept seeks to balance, social, spatial, cultural and economic parameters. Socially, the concept gives tenants the flexibility to present their brands and goods in inventive ways and help shape their retail community. Spatially, it seeks to evoke a ‘street-like’ atmosphere and shopping experience. Culturally, it reinterprets the street culture of Harajuku and Hongdae. And economically, it provides a platform for young entrepreneurs and first time shop-owners on short-term leases to quickly display their products. The net result is an engaging retail experience that is constantly changing, and therefore vibrant and highly engaging”.

Such adaptability is made possible by the modularized approach to both design and construction – an approach that Pomeroy Studio are no strangers to, having executed award-winning modular projects. Project Leader and Senior Designer Nancy Teo commented, “This was made possible by the modular kit of parts that we designed from the outset. It has effectively allowed us to reduce the design and construction time by half”.
