AGC Asahi Glass, a world-leading manufacturer of glass, chemicals, and high-tech materials, and Kinestral Technologies, maker of Halio smart-tinting glass, announced the creation of three joint venture companies that will sell, distribute, and service Halio to meet increasing global demand for smart city solutions. Formed to accelerate the adoption of Halio, the new ventures – Halio North America, Halio International, and Halio China – will be the exclusive sales and marketing agents for Halio smart-tinting glass in the commercial and residential housing industries.
“Partnerships are integral to the successful roll-out of HalioTM smart-tinting glass in the Asia Pacific region to support the growing number of green buildings. As such, joining forces with AGC gives us access to a global sales and support infrastructure, as well as decades of expertise in the use of glass in facades, while GTOC bolsters our manufacturing expertise and provides us access to China, one of the fastest growing markets for smart-tinting glass,” said S.B. Cha, CEO of Kinestral Technologies.
The technology
Halio technology enables glass to tint, reducing glare and blocking unwanted solar heat – automatically or on command. It looks like ordinary clear glass until it tints, achieving its darkest shade in less than 3 minutes, thus improving occupant comfort in smart homes and buildings while achieving up to 40 percent improvement in energy efficiency.
“We are convinced that Halio technology is poised to transform the glass industry,” said Jean- François Heris, senior executive officer of AGC and president of AGC Building and Industrial Glass Company. “Natural light is the #1 most desired feature in office designs, but conventional glass requires blinds, shades, awnings or architectural elements that block heat and glare. Halio gives people the best of the outdoors while meeting increasingly stringent energy codes.”
Jim Arnold, former senior vice president of sales at Control4 and DIRECTV, will head Halio North America. Alain Jardinet, a veteran executive of AGC Glass Europe, will lead Halio International which will sell to all markets outside of North America and China. Halio China will be headed by Alex Jiang, an executive of GTOC.

The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) recently completed a high-end project using its premium-grade shopfront doors for the DFS Group at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This project builds on the success of another DFS project that was completed at the same airport early last year.
The DFS Group, majority-owned by Louis Vuitton, is one of the world’s leading international goods retailer, and has utilised ATDC’s shopfront doors in many of its international stores, such as the ones in Hong Kong, Sydney, Australia and Vietnam. Furthermore, ATDC has helped solve all technical, design and installation challenges to ensure timely handover at competitive prices.
At Tan Son Nhat International Airport, ATDC worked closely with internationally renowned shopfitters Kingsmen & Co, which has 19 offices around the globe, including Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, USA and more. ATDC was involved with Kingsman in every stage, from door design right up to the installation process, and successfully delivered its shopfront doors to meet Kingsmen’s tight handover deadlines.
The doors supplied for this project are ATDC’s 300-millimetre panel polycarbonate infill doors. The curtain is manufactured from extruded aluminium sections with interlocking hinges that are suspended from a rigid overhead support track by commercial grade hangars. These hangars have metal bearings that permit the curtain to fold, slide and stack in a low-friction action for functional integrity and longevity.
Each door is also equipped with an S-bend curved shape at the top of the track, with a 600-millimetre radius, which allows the door to change positions that are relative to the lease line at different points along the span. Up/Down locking mechanisms help achieve speedy and seamless lock-up without the need for permanent millions to latch on to, and without requiring cumbersome, removable mullions that are normally used for overhead doors. Read more about ATDC’s shopfront doors on its website.
ATDC’s range of shopfront doors is currently exported through Southeast Asia, APAC, the Pacific Islands and the UAE. Its management team’s expert knowledge and experience in product design, technical research and development and ATDC’’s long standing working relationships with its freight forwarders and logistics partners are key ingredients of its burgeoning export business.
ATDC’’s management also works closely with its global clients at all stages of the process, and assists in satisfying all structural and design criteria to tailor solutions to meet the requirements of each international project. Visit the ATDC website to learn more.

Cleantech Solar (Thailand) Limited (CST) and Siam Construction Steel Company Limited (SCSC), a subsidiary of Tata Steel Thailand, have entered into a long-term energy supply agreement.
As part of the agreement, CST will deploy, monitor and maintain a 1.4 MWp Solar Photovoltaic (Solar PV) system on the roof of SCSC factory in Rayong. SCSC will enjoy clean renewable solar electricity generated from a Solar PV system over the duration of the agreement. Ingenero (Thailand) Corporation Limited, a local Solar PV integrator, worked closely with Cleantech Solar to develop the project and will be installing the Solar PV system. The Solar PV system is expected to generate over 32 GWh of clean solar electricity over its lifetime.
Mr. Rajiv Mangal, President and CEO of Tata Steel (Thailand) said, “Tata Group places high importance on sustainability and the deployment of solar photovoltaic systems is a testimony to this drive. The Rayong plant will host our first solar PV project in Thailand and this initiative will noticeably reduce our carbon footprint.”

In addition, Mr. Pornchai Thangworakulchai, Vice President – Rayong Plant at SCSC mentioned, “We were interested in solar photovoltaic technology for some time but until recently we found that the project was not financially attractive. The proposal offered by Cleantech Solar for an attractive tariff structure made the Solar PV system attractive and we look forward to working with Cleantech Solar and Ingenero towards the successful deployment of this project.”
The Rayong Solar PV project will use 4,320 modules installed over the north and south facing sides of the roof. The layout is optimised to allow easy maintenance of the roof and the Solar PV system, avoiding any obstructions. In addition to the economic savings, the panels will shade the roof and this is expected to reduce the ambient temperature of the plant.
