NED–Engineering Innovation Challenge

As the finale of National Engineers Day (NED) 2026, the NED–Engineering Innovation Challenge (EIC) Prize Presentation Ceremony was held on Friday, 14 August 2026 at PSB Academy, City Campus. Organised by The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES), the ceremony celebrated the achievements of Singapore’s next generation of engineering innovators.

Dr Syed Harun Alhabsyi, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of National Development, will deliver a congratulatory speech at the event as Guest-of-Honour and present awards to the winning student teams. This year’s EIC showcases the ingenuity of Singapore’s young innovators in bringing the NED 2026 theme “Engineering the New Future: Unlocking Opportunities through Emerging Technologies” to life. EIC is a hands-on competition open to students from secondary schools, junior colleges, Institute of Technical Education, polytechnics and universities.

From fall prevention and rehabilitation technologies to assistive mobility, medication management and elderly monitoring, the projects demonstrate how young people are harnessing emerging technologies to address real-world challenges and improve lives, guided by mentors from academia and industry. The competition attracted 172 team registrations and 160 project submissions, reflecting growing enthusiasm among youths for engineering, innovation and STEM.

Complementing this year’s NED theme, the event also featured a fireside chat with Mr Yee Boon Cheow, Deputy Chief Executive (Infrastructure & Development), Land Transport Authority (pictured above). He shared insights on how emerging technologies are shaping the future of transport and creating new opportunities for engineers in Singapore.

Another highlight of the event was two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), underscoring IES’ commitment to developing a strong pipeline of future-ready engineering talent. IES also signed a new MOU with the Association of Aerospace Industries (Singapore) (AAIS), marking the start of a strategic partnership that will see both organisations co-organise industry events, promote STEM-related initiatives, encourage participation in each other’s training programmes, and share knowledge and expertise to strengthen Singapore’s engineering and aerospace ecosystems.

IES also reaffirmed its partnership with 11 Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs), reinforcing their shared commitment to advancing engineering education, innovation, talent development and industry engagement. Together, they will continue to nurture the next generation of engineering professionals and strengthen Singapore’s engineering ecosystem.

“Engineering has always been about making lives better. The Engineering Innovation Challenge demonstrates that this spirit is alive and thriving among our young people. Their creativity, curiosity and determination to tackle real societal challenges give us great confidence that Singapore’s engineering future is bright. Through National Engineers Day, IES is proud to inspire and nurture future engineers who will shape a more resilient, inclusive and sustainable Singapore,” said IES President Er. Mervyn Sirisena.
